Baekryeoh (Ko. 백려, Hanja: 白麗) is a extraterrestrial Korean Republic of Segmentum Asia, alongside its sister kingdom of Hwanjosun. It is the more liberal and xenophilic of the two. It encompasses the entirety of the planet Handan, but possesses no other planets.

History[]

Hidden Secrets[]

Whereas the Westerners were embroiled in the conflict which would eventually evolve into the Terran War of Hegemonia, the Easterners had a bit different story. China's role as an Eastern hegemon has put some pressure on both Korea and Japan. Initially, the Koreans and the Japanese given their long-standing conflict found it difficult to cooperate, even with American coaxing. Ironically, the assimilation of America into the Socivm Amicorvm scared the Koreans and the Japanese into some sort of cooperation, although this was met with opposition from both sides. However, as the Socivm poised to win the Terran War of Hegemonia, China started to fear Socivm as well, and chose to partake in the alliance alongside the Taiwanese as well, both fearing the Socivm more than they hate the other nations. Korea as the smallest of the new alliance's members, had to have some sort of edge over the other two to have some sort of negotiating weight in the Sphere, and Korea did so by a massive investment in R&D that dwarved even say the entire budget of NASA, if the investment is considered by percentage of GDP. It resulted in short-term suffering, sparking riots as taxes skyrocketed to fund the program, but it resulted in a golden age of technology for the Koreans, allowing them things like very fast spaceships. Unknown to the other two, Korean developments were largely underground led by nationalists, and only the launch of the colonization vessels alarmed the bigger neighbors. Having advanced technologies, Korea now had an edge in negotiations, and China and Japan eventually acknowledged Korea as an equal in the political realms, giving it the control of Sphere's space programs. With that, the Koreans have launched more colonization vessels out, this time including some naturalized citizens (resulting in new family names, such as the Sa (沙, e.g. Sayaka 沙也可) of Japanese origins, and the alternate Kwak that uses the Chinese character 藿 used in China over the surname 郭, used in both China and Korea) from the neighbors as well, right before the Socivm turned and attacked the Asian countries in the second part of the Terran War of Hegemonia. Of these, the colonists of the former expedition that alerted China and Japan would form the Hwanjosun kingdom, and the colonists of cooperative expedition led by the Koreans before the Socivm attacks would form the Baekryeoh republic.

Colonization[]

The expedition that would lead to the foundation of Baekryeoh would leave at G2015, and given the Korean space technology that was developed, the Baekryeoh expedition would arrive at Handan at G2022. Whereas the colonization of Meizotere Hellas was largely heterogenous, and thus development sprawling, the Baekryeoh's foundings were far more homogenous and centralized. Rapid developments were thus possible, and its nominal Korean primacy kept the Hwanjosun friendly, and trade made the newly found nations quite prosperous. Although physical ethnic divisions occurred as ethnic groups tended to prefer to live amongst their own, the success of the colonialization attempt allowed only by cooperation kept the nationalist rivalry at bay, preventing a civil war, although the more extremist side of the population kept the old hatred a visible element in Baekryeoh society.

The Mindae War[]

Unfortunately, it was only a matter of time before Hwanjosun discovered Baekryeoh's heterogeneity. Finding Baekryeoh a bastard nation that shamed the Korean race, the Hwanjosun launched a surprise attack at the Baekryeoh, attacking the space platform Hwapyeong. Angered by the belligerence, the Baekryeoh quickly mobilized to defend its territories. However, the Baekryeoh initially took it slow, only launching a few operations to keep the hawks from fomenting rebellion. It was only after the Hwanjosun's failed attempt at an orbital drop attack at its capital did the Baekryeoh fully dedicate to an offensive war.

Thankfully, the Baekryeoh technology was somewhat superior to the Hwanjosun ones, and with superior weaponries and production, Baekryeoh were able to check Hwanjosun attacks, nullifying their aggression by disabling the supply fleet at the asteroid belt that separated Handan from Hwansun. Although the Baekryeoh had planned on an all-out assault on Hwansun to take down the Hwanjosun, a new variable spun into play...

Asia Eater Invasion[]

The bloody feud between the Asian states were to be turned into utter chaos once the Asia Eater Infantid tribe entered the Hwanin system. One of the first Korean contact with the Asia Eater was the Asia Eater attack on the Baekryeoh main fleet at the asteroid turned fueling station Ma-Am, damaging the main fleet and causing enough ruckus to compromise Baekryeoh plans to attack Hwansun. Although the Hwanjosun attempted to occupy Ma-Am, the Asia Eaters stroke once again, harrying the Hwanjosun fleet giving the battered Baekryeoh fleet enough time to prepare, once again frustrating the Korean kingdoms' plans against one another. Despite the Asia Eater's strengths, the Korean kingdoms did not attempt to seek cease-fire, believing the Asian Eaters are variable enough. It was only the coordinated attacks which was dubbed the Seolnal invasion by the Baekryeoh, and the Gwansun invasion by the Hwanjosun did the kingdoms talk about cease-fire. The Infantid invasion ultimately failed, although the massive drop attacks on the respective planets caused significant damage to infrastructure as well as civilian lives. Whereas the political portion of the Baekryeoh continued to profess non-amity towards the Hwanjosun, the military thought differently, and secretly coordinated an joint operation against the Asia Eaters' main fleet. The joint victory at the Battle of Naju Station drove back the Asia Eaters, and made a political climate ripe for a ceasefire. Conflict due to ideological difference was inevitable, but they recognized a need for peace, as both sides were suffering from great deal of war weariness.

Xenophobic War[]

As the Mindae War slowed down into a fake war, it took a while before an actual ceasefire was signed in G2050, but in practice it was around 20 years of peace until Baekryeoh took part in another war. This time, they joined the punitive expedition launched by their ally Arche Hellenike against the state of Shuranon after Shuranon's diplomatic slight soured relationship between the Arche and Shuranon. While Baekryeoh was hesitant to join the war, the Shuranon also committed the same diplomatic slight against Baekryeoh as well, and Arche's anti-chosen people rhetoric resonated with the Baekryeoh enough for them to take part in the war, even if their commitment was limited.

Arche did not mind Baekryeoh's limited involvement, as Kallistrata was only interested in having Baekryeoh's public support. Baekryeoh was thus able to avoid having great casualties, having not taken part in the early stages of the war where the allied forces took the most casualties. With that said, Baekryeoh's largely pacifist direction conflicted with the Arche's agendas, and the Baekryeoh expressed regret when the Arche chose to bombard Luxium from orbit. However, this strain was soon resolved at the Treaty of Shindo, when the Arche agreed to back down when Baekryeoh confronted the Arche regarding the annexation of Shuranon. As much as Kallistrata would have liked to annex Shuranon, Kallistrata's political capital was exhausted at home, and Kallistrata couldn't simply push that agenda against Baekryeoh and potentially lose an ally. Choi Seong-Man influenced much of the treaty's effects, and while some Arche demands such as hostages to Arche made it to the Treaty of Shindo, Choi Seong-Man prevented Arche from exerting too much influence on Shuranon, instead forcing Shuranon to open its doors to the foreign nations while dismantling some of its exclusive nature which was in the interest of Baekryeoh as well.

Culture[]

Baekryeoh is in a sense a largely idealized form of a multicultural, multiethnic state, although some tensions between the ethnic groups remain for historical reasons. With that said, the tensions are significantly lessened compared to the real world counterparts on Terra, and the mostly East Asian population largely coexist with each other, although ultranationalist fringe groups always proved problematic.

Given a strong Korean influence in Baekryeoh caused by Korean initiatives, one of Baekryeoh's cultural identity stems from Gim Gu's wish in the Baekbeomilji: specifically it wishes to uphold Gim Gu's wish for the most beautiful state rather than the most powerful state. As such, Baekryeoh has a greater focus on culture rather than hard technology, and while its contact (and eventual alliance) with the more STEM-focused Arche Hellenike bolstered the societal view of STEM, Baekryeoh remains the more cultural of the two allies. As the artist is held in high regards, many families with a tradition in the arts take pride in it. Performing arts draw talented Baekryeoh youth to a degree unfathomable to the myriad scholars of the Arche, and the Baekryeoh contact with the more liberal humans of the Posterity of The Sentinels drew some into its fold.

With that said, education is just as highly valued if not more so than in the Arche: Baekryeoh has its share of prestigious schools, and even if the title of the premier institute of science, technology, engineering and mathematics goes to the Phrontisterion of Meizon Pella, Baekryeoh sends plenty of its talented students there, many of whom hail from the Seonggwang (Starlight) School of Engineering and Sciences which is regarded as one of the most prestigious STEM secondary schools in Tmere Asia second only to the Gymnasion Polytechnikon of Meizon Pella. While hard sciences are only just seeing a resurgence, Baekryeoh's tradition in medical school is venerable: Indeok University remains one of the most prestigious medical schools of Tmere Asia, once again second only to Phrontisterion of Meizon Pella.

Oikonomia[]

Diplomacy[]

Baekryeoh is among the most pacifist faction in Tmere Asia and chooses diplomacy over war in almost all cases. The few times it went to war was either because it was attacked (such as in the Mindae War and the subsequent Asia Eater invasion) or because it was fighting alongside allies (as was the case in the Xenophobic War, but nominally).

Baekryeoh has been an ally of the Arche Hellenike for much of shared history, although the alliance was largely tenuous until the Arche gave up on its imperialist agenda after the Xenophobic War. With that said, the Arche's swing towards academics bolstered relationship with the Baekryeoh greatly and the two nations are among the most friendly among Segmentum Asia, only rivalled by the good relationship between the Posterity of The Sentinels and the Lagikoi of Polysiton. Given the nonaggressive nature of the Eleutheroi of Polysiton, even though Baekryeoh's contact with the Eleutheroi intensified only in the G2060s, the Baekryeoh already sees the Eleutheroi as a potential friend.

Baekryeoh has a tense relationship with its sister Korean state of Hwanjoseon. Although Baekryeoh's public opinion is in favor of peace between the two nations, the Hwanjoseon is less receptive to it. However, the Asia Eater invasion made some in Hwanjoseon to believe that cessation of hostilities between the two nation is necessary, if only to fend off against would be threat that could be stronger than the Asia Eaters.

Baekryeoh is neutral towards Arche's sworn enemies, the Tropas Libre. While Baekryeoh has no intention of causing hostilities (a thought shared by the leaders of the Tropas), Baekryeoh's East Asian culture rooted in collectivism finds the libertarian ideology of the Tropas to be unpalatable at best, and repulsive at worst.

Technology[]

Extraterrestrial Korean states have their origins in the pre-Socivm Amicorvm Hegemony era Korea: as such, their Thermal Ray technology was more primitive than those utilized by the later human factions as much of the later development was performed primarily by the Akademia in Hellas, the same organization that created Kallistrata Pellaia. Instead, their signature weapon is the Singijeon, a miniaturized propelled rocket weapon. Likewise, their industrial infrastructure was also more traditional.

With the contact with the powerful Arche Hellenike, Baekryeoh embraced many of the Arche's innovations: As the Arche adopted their Singijeon, localizing it into the Bolos weapons, Baekryeoh also saw the potential of the Thermal Ray technology which saw further development with Kallistrata leading the way. For one, the Baekryeoh recognized the cost efficiency of the Aktinobolos: while the Aktinobolos might not pack the punch of the Singijeon, its lower production and maintenance cost was attractive enough for the Baekryeoh to adopt it and localize it into its own Hyeonbalchongtong (Kr. 현발총통, 晛發銃筒) series just as the Arche did with their Singijeon. More importantly, being more pacifist the Baekryeoh was much more interested in the industrial and scientific application of the Thermal Ray technology, and the good relationship between the Arche and the Baekryeoh allowed Baekryeoh to gain access to most of Arche's technologies regarding the Thermal Ray. The modernization effort began with Choi Seong-Man, and by the time of Gwak Mong-Ju, the Baekryeoh industries have fully integrated the Thermal Ray technology as needed.

However, Baekryeoh also gave technological secrets to the Arche as well: for one, the Korean republic had a greater tradition of celestial navigation technology, and it was the bargaining chip the Baekryeoh used to cement the amiable relationship between the two states. It was Baekryeoh technology that allowed the Arche to construct its Great Beacon of Antigoneia, and it was Baekryeoh technology that allowed Arche to establish colonies outside Alexandreiastron system - namely Anatole in the Borealopontos system and later Pontikos in the Chrysochous system.
